4 C’s

What quality of diamond should you buy?

A diamond’s beauty, rarity and price is determined by the characteristics known as the 4 C’s –Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight

The 4 C’s will help you understand how diamonds are valued and priced and help you decide what is most important to you in a diamond.

Cut of all the 4 C’, has the greatest effect on a diamonds beauty. Not to be confused with the shape of a diamond, cut refers to the proportions, symmetry and finish of a diamond.

The light performance of a diamond depends on the cutters skill to place those angles and facets. It also takes time to polish the facets to a bright, smooth finish. A poor polish on a diamond can reduce the brightness of its sparkle, just as minute scratches can dull a glass surface.

Color is determined by viewing the body of a diamond from the side with the table down and the proper lighting. Pure colorless diamonds are classified as D, the most rare and valuable, to various degrees of yellow.

Clarity is the degree to which identifying characteristics known as inclusions are present in a diamond. Flawless has no inclusions visible under 10X magnification, VVS (Very,Very Slightly Included) has minute inclusions extremely difficult to locate under 10X magnification, VS (Very Slightly Inlcuded) has minor inclusions difficult to locate under 10X magnification, SI has inclusions that are noticeable and easy to locate under 10x magnification, I (Imperfect) has inclusions that can be visible to the naked eye.

Carat Weight is a standard unit of measurement used for gemstones. A diamond weight is the easiest of the 4 C’s to measure. There are 100 points in a carat. A 50 point diamond is ½ a carat. Carat weight is the least important of the 4 C’s in determining the beauty of a diamond. No matter what size, every Futer Bros. diamond offers maximum sparkle and brilliance.
