Estate Jewelry Appraisals: All You Need To Know
Author:
Debbie Ashway
Estate jewelry appraisals involve an expert assessment of a piece of jewelry’s value. This can be helpful when trying to determine how much a piece is worth, or when trying to negotiate a fair price.

Appraisers will take into account the style, materials, and condition of the piece, as well as any historical or sentimental value it may have. The final appraisal will be based on their expert opinion and should be considered an estimate of the piece's worth.

Periods of Estate Jewelry

Different periods of estate jewelry are characterized by different styles and materials. The most common periods are Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and Retro.
  • Georgian jewelry (1714-1830) is characterized by delicate designs made with gold and silver.
  • Victorian jewelry (1837-1901) is characterized by its sentimental designs. It was a time of great emotional upheaval, which is reflected in the jewelry of the time.
  • Art Nouveau jewelry (1890-1915) is characterized by its sinuous, organic lines. This style of jewelry was inspired by nature and often features motifs such as flowers, leaves, and birds.
  • Edwardian jewelry (1901-1920) is very delicate and feminine. This style of jewelry features intricate designs, often with filigree work or lace-like patterns.
  • Art Deco jewelry (1920-1935) is characterized by its geometric shapes and strong, angular lines. This style of jewelry was inspired by the Art Deco movement in architecture and design.
  • Retro jewelry (1935-1950) is often very colorful and bold. This style of jewelry was influenced by the Hollywood glamour of the time.

How to Evaluate Estate Jewelry

When it comes to estate jewelry, there are a few key factors you'll want to keep in mind in order to ensure you're getting a piece that is both valuable and beautiful. Here is how estate jewelry is evaluated:
  • First, the appraiser will take a look at the overall condition of the piece. Is it in good condition, or has it suffered some wear and tear?
  • Second, they will consider the materials that the piece is made from. Is it made from precious metals and stones, or is it made from more common materials?
  • Third, they will look at the craftsmanship of the piece. Is it well-made, or does it look like it was put together quickly?
  • Finally, they will take into account the piece’s history. Is it a family heirloom, or was it purchased recently?
Keep these factors in mind when evaluating estate jewelry, and you'll be sure to make a wise purchase.

How Much Does Jewelry Appraisal Cost?

Based on your needs, Futer Bros. Jewelers charges different rates for jewelry appraisal.
  • Jewelry appraisal for insurance: in case of loss, this type of appraisal estimates the replacement cost of your piece of jewelry. This service costs $150 per item and includes cleaning, analyzing, researching, typing, pictures, a grading chart, and a list of questions about your jewelry that you would want to discuss with your insurance company.
  • Estate appraisal for jewelry: the goal of an estate appraisal is to represent Fair Market Value, which is a fair and agreeable price for a typical buyer and seller. Our rate for estate jewelry appraisals is $100 per hour, which helps to keep the overall expense down for large estates. This service includes cleaning, analyzing, researching, typing, a grading chart, and two copies. We can also assist with custom jewelry design for sentimental items, or liquidation of estate jewelry.
Jewelry appraisals are available at our store while you wait, or call us to request an appointment for an in-home jewelry appraisal.
